The safety function of an explosion vent is to prevent the outbreak of an enclosure (equipment or local) in case of explosion of gas or dust that would take place in the protected enclosure. The vent allows to maintain the integrity of the volume of the chamber and avoid projections.
An explosion vent is initially closed orifice which can escape the combustion gases of the explosion. It is expected to open when the internal pressure exceeds a critical value called reduced pressure chosen significantly smaller than the maximum allowable pressure by the entire structure (of the compound bursting pressure). The sizing of the orifice is such that the excess gas produced by the combustion can be discharged to the outside so that the internal pressure is still below the maximum permissible pressure by the structure.
